Mala FAQs
Who is the DC Global Mala?
We are a group of D.C.-based yogis committed to taking our practice off the mat and into the world. By participating in the Yoga Mala, we dedicate our collective practice of 108 Sun Salutations for peace, healing, and other important intentions.
How can I get involved as a volunteer or sponsor?
There are many ways to be involved. You can volunteer your time, donate your money, and share in our mission. To learn more about how you can join us as an individual or like-minded business sponsor, please email us at dcglobalmala@gmail.com.
What is the Global Mala Project?
The Global Mala Project is a worldwide effort spearheaded by Shiva Rea, Sean Corne, Michael Franti, and yogis, yoga studios, performers and activists around the world.
Composed of 108 beads, the mala is symbolic of the prayer for peace, hope and charity. The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a “mala around the earth” through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108. All monetary proceeds and collective intention go to benefit some of our planet’s most pressing issues.
Every year, studios and communities offer their form of a Yoga Mala according to their yoga tradition and inspiration. Each Global Mala event is dedicated to practice or to practice and “seva” – service by integrating local action, and raising funds for the organization of their choice. Sacred activities can include:
- 108 Sun Salutations (or variations of 27, 56)
- 108 rounds of mantra such as the Gayatri or Maha Mrityanjaya
- 108 rounds of a kriya
- 108 minutes of meditation, kirtan or movement meditation
