A Genuine Instinct Towards Seva

By cuzzell, 28 June 2010

Every week, Anahata Grace will honor our volunteer and staff experiences through a weekly blog.  This week, Finding Grace volunteer and dedicated yogini Shawn Parell will selflessly share with us her lifetime commitment to service.

“The fruit of love is service. Prayer in action is love, and love in action is service.” – Mother Teresa

I first learned about Anahata Grace (then just Anahata International) in the winter of 2007-2008. Like many of us at that time, I was inspired—and still am—by the story of a small band of karma yogis dedicated to promoting healing and social change in places that might seem geographically or contextually far away to most.  As one among many thousands of non-profit workers in our nation’s capital, an organizer of the DC Global Mala, and a teacher and longtime student of the yogic arts, I resonated with the simple sankalpa, or intention, to share that which has enriched my life so immeasurably with others in need. And I felt an instinct to help.

… Does this sound familiar to you?

Can’t Get Enough of Flow Love Baby

By cuzzell, 24 June 2010

What’s the one thing we just have to do every week?  Why, host a class at Flow Yoga Center of course! We can’t get enough of this place and neither can this week’s 1:30 p.m. donation class teacher Dawn Hennessy.

As a child, Dawn was always fascinated by yoga and did an occasional shoulder stand and plow pose in her parent’s living room.  In 2002, she began her yoga practice with Hatha and Kundalini and then discovered Jivamukti and Ashtanga along with an occasional Bikram class here and there.  Dawn is now a dedicated Jivamukti and Ashtanga yogi and completed her 200 Hour Teacher Training at the District’s Flow Yoga Center in 2009.

This Saturday’s class is for level 1-2 full of asanas that can be modified depending on the student’s flexibility.  Hopefully students will leave the class feeling both relaxed and energized.

The Hero Effect

By cuzzell, 21 June 2010

Every week, Anahata Grace will honor our volunteer and staff experiences through a weekly blog.  This week, Finding Grace staff member Alexis Mitchell will talk a little bit about how we’re all heroes.

The Pedigree “Heroes” ad tells the story of those who haven’t been given the opportunity to see the brightest side of life.  “Shelter dogs aren’t broken, they’ve simply experienced more life.  If they were human, we would call them wise.  They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write; the ones dealt a bad hand responded with courage.  Do not pity a shelter dog, adopt one.”

Pedigree has mastered the art of effectively relaying its pure intentions of changing the lives of shelter animals.  The message it gets across is one of service, encouraging the listener to take purposeful actions to enhance the life of another and not to mistake a difficult state for a sorry one.

Some Yin for your Yang…

By cuzzell, 16 June 2010

This Saturday, join Megan Davis for Yin Yoga workshop at Yoga Chai.

Yin yoga provides the perfect balance to your active (yang) yoga practice. Yin utilizes long-held floor poses, meditation and breath work to target the connective tissues of the body—the ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Working on these connective tissues can help to increase flexibility and decrease stagnant energy in the body. Years of a dedicated asana practice will make anyone healthier, stronger, and more flexible, but at some point the muscles will have reached their limit of flexibility.

2010 Rejuvenation Retreat

By cuzzell, 8 June 2010

Every week, Anahata Grace will honor our volunteer and staff experiences through a weekly blog.  This week, Anahata Grace collaborator, HawaH, and founder of the non-profit, One Common Unity, will discuss their upcoming Rejuvenation Retreat.

In the year 2008, One Common Unity organized our first large scale retreat and called it The Restoration Retreat. The following year we teamed up with two tremendous community partners in Flow Yoga Center and Java Green Eco Café.  By this second year, with the help of Ian and Debra Mishalove (the owners of Flow Yoga Center) and our miracle working event coordinator Carolyn Butcher, we had doubled the size of the retreat to 80 people… and decided to rename it “Rejuvenation.”  This second name seems to have stuck and what we offer today is a no holds barred opportunity for creativity, freedom, nature and fun.

To Put a Price on Health

By cuzzell, 1 June 2010

Every week, Anahata Grace will honor our volunteer and staff experiences through a weekly blog.  This week, Finding Grace volunteer and acupuncturist Nicole Mires will discuss a recent New York Times article about the financial burdens of wellness, specifically acupuncture. Remember to check back weekly, as our journey of compassionate action has just begun.

In these times of instant gratification and tightened budgets, it can seem overwhelming to invest a chunk of money into something which you may not immediately notice the results.  The results from receiving acupuncture for pain or stress relief can certainly be noticed immediately, but if the patient is not willing to follow through with consistent sessions, those effects wear off over time.
