Recent Rwandan Teacher Meeting
August 26th, 2008 by Angela CerkevichThe Rwandan yoga teachers have recently formed the “Kicukiru Yoga for Peace Club” having established a president, secretary and treasurer to keep tabs on things. Agnas, a natural leader, is president and determined to expand the yoga community beyond the outskirts of Kigali. I spent about an hour on the phone this weekend with Benon, Anahata’s Rwandan yoga coordinator, and each of the teachers to learn about their exciting new endeavor. In addition to offering yoga classes to the public, holding regular meetings and planning for the Yoga Peace Club’s participation in local community events, they have also begun collecting funds to create an account for the Peace Club. So far, the funds will be used to provide refreshments to yoga practitioners. This marks the beginning of sustainability of the project, demonstrating the teachers initiative and planting roots for positive social change.
