Recent Rwandan Teacher Meeting
August 26th, 2008 by Angela CerkevichThe Rwandan yoga teachers have recently formed the “Kicukiru Yoga for Peace Club” having established a president, secretary and treasurer to keep tabs on things. Agnas, a natural leader, is president and determined to expand the yoga community beyond the outskirts of Kigali. I spent about an hour on the phone this weekend with Benon, Anahata’s Rwandan yoga coordinator, and each of the teachers to learn about their exciting new endeavor. In addition to offering yoga classes to the public, holding regular meetings and planning for the Yoga Peace Club’s participation in local community events, they have also begun collecting funds to create an account for the Peace Club. So far, the funds will be used to provide refreshments to yoga practitioners. This marks the beginning of sustainability of the project, demonstrating the teachers initiative and planting roots for positive social change.
In addition to local outreach, one of their key interests is what US yoga practitioners are doing and how they might be able to exchange information with yoga groups in the US. This offers a promising begining to a truly unique exchange between yoga practioners around the world.
Several teachers have been teaching some specific populations including:
Crystera, an energetic girl (and one of the youngest teachers) has been working with a group of pregnant women and is eager to recieve more books and videos on yoga for pregnacy.
Vainny, an incredibly driven and focused young man has been devotoing many hours to working with children and is eager for yoga games for kids.
Several of the teachers have even spent time exploring yoga with some of the local elders. Because of these teacher’s efforts, yoga is receiving great support in the community do to the elders approval — this is very exciting news!
The yoga peace club secretary will now be responsible for providing regular monthly reports to Anahata International on the evolution of the group which I am very much looking forward to sharing.
